Harrison County: BSL Bridge

Smith Phillips' client owned a parcel of about an acre on Highway 90 at Henderson Point where she ran a seasonal fireworks business.  Hurricane Katrina destroyed her building and the nearby Bay St. Louis bridge.  As part of the bridge replacement project, the State took over half of the parcel to reconstruct and relocate the Highway 90 approach to the bridge.  As is often the case, the issues at trial included not only the value of the property actually taken but also the damage done to the value of the remaining property.  The case was tried in Gulfport, Mississippi, and a Harrison County Jury returned a verdict for the full amount of the property owner's appraisal
