For over 40 years, the firm has represented policyholders, both businesses and individuals, in landmark cases involving virtually all types of insurance including, but not limited to, life insurance, automobile insurance, liability insurance, health insurance, annuities and insurance company-issued investment products, supplemental cancer policies, and insurance policies and products of every kind.

Founding partner Richard T. “Flip” Phillips heads the Smith Phillips Insurance Litigation Team.

Flip is recognized nationwide as a leading representative of insurance policyholders. He has served as lead counsel and co-lead counsel in multiple national insurance class actions and MDL proceedings on behalf of policyholders from coast to coast. He has represented thousands of policyholders in class actions , Multi-District Litigation, and individual cases, not only in Mississippi but in cases throughout the United States.

His jury verdicts for individual policyholders have been recognized in the WALL STREET JOURNAL and the NATIONAL LAW JOURNAL's “Top Verdicts in America.” In addition to obtaining multi-million dollar jury verdicts and settlements for policyholders, Mr. Phillips is a frequent lecturer on insurance litigation for professional organizations and trial attorneys (both plaintiff and defense).

He is the author of one book MISSISSIPPI AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE, First Edition (Harrison Company) and supplements thereto from 1988 through 1994, numerous lay and Law Journal articles, including, among others, “A Guide to Uninsured Motorist Insurance Law in Mississippi,” MISSISSIPPI LAW JOURNAL (1982), and “Underinsured Motorist Coverage in Mississippi,” MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE LAW REVIEW (1982), and chapters in two multi-volume MATTHEW-BENDER national legal treatises.

In 2013, Mr. Phillips was inducted as a Member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Coverage and Extra-Contractual Counsel, where he serves as a representative of insurance policyholders.  A former President of the William C. Keady Chapter of the American Inns of Court and the state Trial Lawyers Association, Flip is uniquely positioned to lead the successful Smith Phillips Insurance Litigation team in Mississippi and throughout the nation.
