Public Service

Public and community service is a meaningful priority at Smith Phillips Mitchell Scott & Nowak. SmithPhillips attorneys and personnel are active in many civic and community organizations such as Boy Scouts and Lions Club. On an individual basis, they are active in their respective churches, holding offices both locally and on a regional basis.

The firm as a whole supports numerous public and community activity programs on an ongoing basis. Support and advancement of education in Mississippi is a priority in SmithPhillips' programs. Members of the firm, including both attorneys and lay personnel, are thankful for the education that enabled them to practice in the legal profession where they can make a difference.

Smith Phillips Mitchell Scott & Nowak Scholarship Program

Each year SmithPhillips awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors who demonstrate scholastic achievement and community leadership. The Smith Phillips Mitchell Scott & Nowak Scholarship, designed to recognize deserving students and encourage the obtaining of a higher education, consists of a financial contribution towards tuition at a college of the recipient’s choice. Over the years the SmithPhillips Scholarship Program has been in effect, more than twenty high school seniors have received the award. Currently $2,000 per year is distributed to graduates of four area schools: South Panola High School in Batesville, Mississippi, North Panola High School in Sardis, Mississippi, Magnolia Heights School in Senatobia, Mississippi, and North Delta School in Batesville. Recipients are chosen by scholarship committees in each of the respective schools, and SmithPhillips is proud to recognize the achievements of the bright, young recipients of the annual scholarships.

High School Mock Trial Competition

For ten years SmithPhillips attorneys have coached high school mock trial competition teams, including teams at North Delta, Magnolia Heights and South Panola High Schools. Sponsored by The MISSISSIPPI BAR, the high school mock trial competition is a state-wide program. Local teams coached by SmithPhillips members have gone to regional and state competition. It is especially rewarding to SmithPhillips team coaches from the early years of the mock trial competitions to see early members, now responsible adults, parents and in some cases members of the legal profession, who put in the effort and energy required of students to participate in this highly competitive and intellectually stimulating program.
