Founded in 1974 by Briggs Smith and Richard Phillips, Smith Phillips has provided a full range of legal services since its inception. In 1993, the firm merged with Wilroy, Scott and Rutherford, an established DeSoto County, Mississippi firm that traces its roots to the early 1900's. Smith Phillips Mitchell Scott & Nowak now consists of eleven attorneys and a large staff of lay personnel operating from two offices in Batesville and Hernando, Mississippi.
Smith Phillips handles a full range of legal services including business and individual litigation, nationwide class actions, insurance litigation, eminent domain and land use litigation, serious personal injury litigation, and other civil litigation in state and federal courts throughout the country. Smith Phillips also represents state and national corporate clients in their general corporate business, real estate and other legal matters.
The firm represents a number of governmental entities, including cities and counties. After over 25 years’ experience as City Attorneys, the firm is representing, with increasing frequency, governmental entities as Plaintiffs in litigation arising from the numerous matters facing cities, counties and state governmental bodies today. Principals in the firm have held state and national positions in professional organizations including, among others, The Mississippi Bar, the Lamar Order, the America Association for Justice, Mississippi Association for Justice, and others.
